I posted a similar shot of this over in ES&S yesterday and it was brought to my attention to use a faster shutter speed to give the water more texture (I always seem to use the longest shutter speed) So tonight I tried a faster shutter speed and I really liked the results...
if you have time please compare the 2 and let me know what you think....this is a great little stretch of the lewis river and I am having fun photographing it...
the warm tones are from the setting sun as this was taken about 7:15pm tonight
Sorry you haven't gotten more replies. #1 is okay, Darren. I think it depends on how you like the water to look. IMHO, the whited-out look is getting a little cliche.... Back to the comparison... #2 is better I think for several reasons: the angle of view, the way you grouped the rocks with more space in front of the one on the right side, and more texture in the water. It really roils in places, and faster ss makes that more apparent. The evening light is a nice touch, too. I can see why you're fascinated with this stretch of river! Looks like a million photo ops and fun to watch. The number of cascades in this makes me want to use every lens I have!
Darren,
I think this is excellent. The shutter speed you used here makes a world of difference. It sort of has a dramatic effect. Maybe it's a little tight on the left side but not a big deal.
I like the choice of shutter speed chosen here. I'm always experimenting with different speeds dependent on the flow of water(volume) and the mood I want to portray.

Erik and Eric, thanks....
I kind of have to laugh because when you mentioned it being tight on the left. I had to do it that way because that stupid log I have been trying to photograph is laying on the left hand rock.....
I am really liking this faster shutter speed effect too, I am glad someone mentioned it to me....
This particular speed you chose for this shot lends itself to portraying power. Had you chosen a longer shutter speed and created a more dreamy, silky looking water, the visual impact would have a completely different mood.

almost makes the water look "thick"
