Hi, I'm from the UK and at short notice will be in Kansas with effect from 4/12/07 for three months. Geographically in the centre of the US so I'm prepared to travel. I'm lacking in local knowledege so would appreciate any suggestions of locations to consider.
My interest is in Avian photography as a hobby.
Thank you

Barry,
This post should go in the CENTRAL STATES forum. Good luck in Kansas. It's pretty flat out there! Watch out for the Wizard of OZ and the tornadoes!
Barry, I think that Jack is right that you will get more local knowledge in the Central States forum. However, one easy check you can do for avian photography is do an Internet search on National Wildlife Refuge sites in the US, and look specifically for locations in Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, Iowa and Oklahoma. With only a three month visit (I suspect it will go quickly) I think that is a good place to start.....

You might want to check the Upper Mississippi River NWR, it's in northeastern Iowa / Wisconsin border. It's a very scenic place that I'd like to spend more time at when it's not raining.

I'm afraid I can't really be of much help as I'm not an Avian photog but I do know that there are alot of wildlife refuges in Illinois and other midwest states that offer many bird opps for photos. So definitely, check the internet for that. Also, on the Mississippi in various locales, the eagles are plenty in the winter months (not sure when you'll be in Kansas) so check that out as well. Good luck in Kansas!!! It'll be "culture shock" compared to the UK but Midwesterners are very friendly!!!

Barry,
Check with the RMNP (Rocky Mountain Nature Photographers) forum. They are super helpful and you can find lots of wildlife in Colorado and other Rocky Mountain states (and they aren't too far from KS, depending on if you want a day trip or if you are willing to stay overnight or for several days.
I'd also suggest the Sandhill Cranes in Nebraska. Not being a bird photog i can't tell you much about their season, but try these websites:
