Bees of all shapes and sizes out in force today. Difficult to capture hand held with Macro lens as they flit about too much but this big Bumbler stopped a while and allowed me to get quite close.
Hi John,
Very nice shot , I agree with Mark the pose is spot on , maybe a touch more DOF , nice detail in the head of the bee considering the techs.

Hi John
There's just not enough DOF in this for me. at this magnification I'd really looking to stop down to around f/16-f/22 and use flash for a more technical shot.
Thanks for the comments, I take on board the DOF issue, unfortunately this shot was unplanned with no tripod nearby so stopping down was not an option as either noise or my trembling hands would have become an issue. I am fairly new to Macro work and plan to get a small tripod which will alllow a low POV as my current Gitzo is a bit to bulky for getting in close on these sort of shots, I think an angle finder may also be on the shopping list but have never used one so any comments would be appreciated.
Cheers
John

Good colours and great viewpoint. I agree about the DOF but preferable to using flash unless totally necessary IMHO.
Thanks for the comment, I did try it at 90 deg CCW but couldn't decide whether the flower looked quite right so stuck with the 'as shot' image above which I think is a bit different to the usual 'head up' shots (and is the natural pose).
Hi John,
Regarding Angle Finders , I can highly recommend them , very useful piece of kit and you'd be surprised how many times you need one to get a particular shot whether it be low level or macro , I use the Canon variety which is excellent.
Nicely balanced composition. I use a monopod for this type of on the hoof shot which I find helpful. Regarding angle finders I bought a chinese one off ebay - Seagull brand I think that works really well and is a LOT cheaper than the Nikon equivalent. Fits my D200 and comes with Canon fittings too.

Lovely shot - the colours work really well and the head up pose is great.

Excellent shot considering the techs. Agree more DOF would be nice. Would this look better turned round 90 degrees CCW to portrait?
