Hi, I'm from the UK and find myself in Kansas with effect 4/11/07 for three months. Located base Milford.

My hobby is avian photogragphy. I'm seeking local knowledge and locations to visit during my stay. I would appreciate any pointers. I'm prepared to travel as required.

Thank you

Barry :wavey: :wavey:

Hi Barry,

I'm not much of an avain photographer but I'll chime in anyway. It sounds like your working out near Fort Riley (Junction City, KS), is that correct? If so, two things come to mind near you.

First, there are probably nesting bald eagles on the Milford Resevoir and I'm pretty sure there are some knowledgeable "fish & wildlife" types who could point you in the right direction.

Second, the Konza Prairie is very near Manhattan and has many miles of hiking trails and may provide some opportunities for prairie dwelling avain subjects. There are also some streams with old growth trees which may provide shots of red-winged blackbirds, woodpeckers, etc.

That is all I can think of right now, hope that helps. Good luck and good shooting! :wavey:

Welcome to Kansas. If you want to head a couple hours southwest, you'll find Quivira NWR and Cheyenne Bottoms in central Kansas. Both are great for birds, and shorebird migration should be kicking into high gear (Last May Quivira was great). I can't speak for good areas in the NE part of KS, but I've spent a lot of time at Quivira and Cheyenne Bottoms. This website http://ksbirds.org/ would be a good place to start for Kansas bird info. Join the birding listserv (option 6 on the above page); this would be a good place to find hotspots and hook up with birders.

Good luck, and if you venture to central Kansas, feel free to contact me at list@heartland-images.com .
