Yet another Green Finch
Hi all
Firsly I hope every one as had a nice Easter and secondly your comments please.

I spent a couple of hours today at my first feeding station. Sitting in my new portable hide (much to the amusement of my wife and daughter) and had a very relaxing afternoon trying my hand at some wild bird pics.

The fact that i only had 2 Blue Tits, a Robin but 83 Green Finches won't deter me! and talking of Green Finches.

What do you think to this photo, Background and the composition?

The station is on my friends small holding and at the edge of a field which gives me a clean background but is it TO CLEAN to boreing? (it is grass i promise)

Techs.

300mm F2.8 + 2x

ISO 800

Well, I love that clean bg - the colour compliments the greenfinch superbly and isolates the bird most effectively. :toast:

the pale green bg is great, like Clive said it compliments the darker green of the finch

Nice complimentary bg and a nice pose, on my monitor the image looks to have been processed a touch over and could maybe benifit from reducing the exposure a shade and adding a slight 'S' curve to improve the contrast, if I had a nit, it would be the rather uninteresting perch and that it leaves the image via the top corner, but that really is minor.

Nice stufffrom a first feeding set-up kevin - and don't let the family laugh at you too much either as results like this will always be worth any mickey taking imo.

An (effective) 600mm lens at f5.6 will only give you a depth of field of 30mm; not enough for the bird in that position. If you were using a 600/f4, you need to be shooting at f8 to ensure adequate front-to-back sharpen imo, however, with the 300/2x combination, the images are generally soft unless you stop down to f11.

For my taste (I`m probably in a minority), the background is a little too monotone, making the (excellent) picture look a little too much like a studio set-up.
I would aim for a more interesting background; not distracting, but perhaps with a few different shades of green so the picture looks like a natural history, rather than a studio, shot.
Of course, like all things aesthetic, this is a purely a matter of personal taste. Try to create pictures that please you!

I can't decide about trhe bg, maybe is a bit too clean, but like the pose and comp, and I've yet to have a go at Greenfinches/feeder stations properly so this looks pretty fine to me.
