I'll be going to Gatlinburg this weekend. After the freeze, what would be the best places to shoot? Steve, do you think the lady slippers survived, and if so would they be blooming? Any help is appreciated. I'll be there Sunday & Monday.

If you hit 441 before they close the road you might be able to photograph snow! Forecast is for possibly one to three inches above 2500 ft late Sunday into Monday. Old man winter just won't throw in the towel.
Alice, not sure about the smokies but here in Cary, the yellow and pink lady slippers are just pushing up leaves. I did see one pink with a bud on it today. We are at about 750 feet in elevation.
Just came back from a weeklong trip to the park. Did a lot of hiking & driving around. The freeze hit everything very hard as Nye mentioned in another post. Some of the trillium are bouncing back in limited areas, but they are hit or miss. Cove hardwood trail had a few on their last legs as far as being shootable, only isolated macros will work as the whole forest floor is filled with droopy plant life of all kinds. The sink was decent with phlox. Took a couple of 8X10's there. Dogwoods seemed to make it through the freeze somewhat, but the rain on Wednesday knocked a lot of the blooms down. You can still find a few that are late bloomers though. Went to Porters early last week and there was solid snow past the 3rd bridge, everything dead. Chestnut gap (sp?) trail at the "Y" was hit hard. Did not see any ladyslippers blooming yet but did see leaves in many of the typical areas, will have to wait and see if the freeze affected them. I suspect they will start showing up soon though. Roaring fork had plenty of white trillum still in decent shape near just past the "cabin" area, but I can't guarantee that they are still there now. Bluets were everywhere along streambeds and I took advantage of those. Sorry to give such a gloomy report. My only suggestion is to drive around and see what is out. I came back with some very nice slides, but like I said, I had to work very hard for them. Maybe I'll post one in the next day or two after I get a chance to start scanning.
