Greater Yellowlegs
Its shorebird migration time again... This was a panning shot as the bird was walking.
iso 125, 320th sec, f6.7, 500mm plus 1.7 telextender, 40% of original image, wish I had been closer. It could have been sharper...

I'm with dan elster on the avian popsicle or birdsicle shots...

David,
Thats quite a good shot for the amount of focal length you were working with. To me, these are some of the toughest type shots to capture. Well Done!

Not dead sharp...but for a panning shot, it's pretty good. I'm no avian expert though.

Could have been sharper and a lower angle may have been nice, (sometimes easier said than done.

I'll try to work on it the next time we see the sun up here, perhaps in a month or so...

Wow, i think it's a great shot the way the water and the bird's plumage imitate each other. The water, and the bird in stride make for a pleasing rendition of movement. For a panning shot with such a large lens, I'm impressed.

Well, I gotta be honest. To me its just another bird walking shot. Nothing special here. I'd be more excited if you caught it doing something in a fleeting moment. Something that required you to wait, wait, wait, then wait some more before you finally tripped the shutter and captured that magic moment when it nabs a meal or something more behavioral. Check out the work of Simon Allenby as a reference. (he hasn't post on here in a long time but his shots are easy to find).

As for the comp, I'd give the bird a little bit more room on the right side and top to walk into, making this more 3:2 format.

I'll give ya some credit on a hard to take panning shot though. You did very well there.

Eric, I don't disagree with you! This is really boring and it is blurred. Note it was shot at iso 125. It would have been a lot sharper at iso 200 with tradeoffs... The only reason I posted was to support Dan Elster and the anti "bird on the stick" movement of avian photography which dominates the main site here.

For those of us who enjoy avian nature photography, it is difficult to get good feedback. The national site is dominated by the school of birds on the stick. The PNW site seems to shy away from birds in favor of landscape work. Just an observation...
