Earlier in a reply about this topic to Dave Showalter, I reported that Vista stripped the metadata info from photos downloaded to my Vista laptop when downloading directly into a Vista document folder.
Good News!!!! I was able to download Canon's Digital Photo Professional 3.0 (latest update-Vista supported) to my laptop. Now when opening the compact flash card in DPP 3.0, then saving either directly to an external HD or to a Vista document folder, all metadata was saved with the photo, including the sequence number assigned by the camera.
Again, saving the compact flash card directly to a Vista document folder without using DPP will strip the metadata, but using DPP as an interface and saving from that software into a Vista document folder will preserve all metadata.
Actually Ken, I used to have a Mac which was a lemon (constant cursor freezes, forcing rebooting) but the dealer refused to take it back and so did Apple. So the Mac bridge was burned and I will never buy another Mac,although I am still using an Apple Studio Display with XP.
I have had zero problems with WinXP and love it. Vista being new is only a problem for people who have software that hasn't been updated to the Vista platform, or hardware that hasn't been updated with new drivers, yet. That's more of a vendor problem, although it would seem good for business to be more backward compatible than what Vista is, or XP was, when it was introduced. But then I know nothing about programming and the headaches that backward compatibility would create for the Vista platform.
I'm glad you and all those other Mac maniacs are happy with your Macs, though. The world needs the competition, even though Apple has only ~10% of the market, maybe someday they'll get 20% and that might make Microsoft nervous forcing them to create better products.
Apple/Mac, Nikon/Canon, Ford/Chevy, it's pretty hilarious! As long as there are 2 competing product lines there will always be 2 opinionated groups of people. It just makes the products better and we all win!!!

Thanks for the heads-up on DPP 3.0, Don! And good to hear you got the problem worked out.
