Well, it wasn't really evening but it was an Evening Grosbeak (male). This was taken this morning after 2-3 inches of very slushy snow fell during the night. This was one of about 100 birds of 4 different species that showed up at my feeder for breakfast. It makes for quite the auditory and visual feast. A Sharp-shinned Hawk swooped in for his own version of breakfast a bit later but unfortunately (for the hawk), left with an empty stomach. All the birds evaporated into the surrounding forest but returned about 20 minutes later.

Man, that is one colorful bird! Nice shot, Don. What would you think about blurring the background a little bit more to make him stand out a bit better?
That's funny, Kalin, the Mountain Bluebird, is one species that doesn't show up here. They like large meadows and fields, and I'm too far into the forest for them. That's one species that I have not had much success with even when I'm where they are. They always seem to be on a fence post or other manmade object when I see them, plus they don't usually allow a close enough approach for an adequate filling of the frame. MB's are insect eaters and I haven't heard that they respond to seed feeders (try grubs for them), although, White-breasted Nuthatches are primarily insect eaters that respond really well to shelled sunflower seeds. Grosbeaks love the sunflower seeds by the way and prefer forested areas.
Absolutely beautiful, Don. The tilted head and open beak are a nice touch, and the absence of vivid colors in the background really help this guy stand out.
The birds are starting to show up down here, too. Just noticed last night that a western kingbird has returned to her nest from last year, built into the beams on our front porch. Goldfinches should be arriving soon!
