I had a computer built with 4G RAM because I wanted to work in 16 bit. Windows for some reason won't recognize it, saying I only have 1.75 and of course PSCS2 will only use part of that. Had an expert come in, he talked with Microsoft, they said there was a software KEY to get the RAM recognized but their instructions don't work. They suggest I go to VISTA and that will clear up my problems completely. Has anyone ever heard of something like this? It sounds like a sales push for VISTA. I would appreciate any input.
Also does CS2 run on Vista? I also did check to make sure the ram was installed, it counts out on start up as over 4 gig.

The answer can be found in great detail at:

You may still not get all 4 GB recognized--some of it is used behind the scenes. On mine, Windows reports something like 3.5 GB.

I wouldn't move to Vista unless you had an application-specific reason for doing so. (IIRC, it won't improve PSCS2's memory recognition significantly over the solution already provided...) At present, Vista still has some "features" you may not appreciate, especially if you use your system for games, music, or some other specific uses. I expect that over time, it will improve, but like most Microsoft products, it's best after a service pack or two.

I agree with Les about Vista. I have it on my laptop and have had numerous small issues. Programs aren't compatible in some cases, have to update drivers (some aren't available yet), security issues, etc. Vista has absolutely comvinced me that this will be my last PC purchase. I'm tired of giving Bill Gates $$ for crappy products. It will be Mac for me for now on.

Hi, everyone, thank you for the input. I'll be trying the fix tomorrow under SUPERVISION. I tend to be a one step forward, ten back type of techno person. Bill, I am seriously considering making the change to MAC also. I've had it up to, well, you know. I asked my tech person and the fix here is the same type Microsoft was giving out, only on a different area. I have high hopes. Again, thank you all so much for such a quick response.

Hi Renae,

I don't know squat about PC's (and not a bunch about Mac's) but, with the mac's some OS's don't recognize all the RAM you can have installed on a machine. I have a G4 which is physically capable of having 2gigs of Ram installed but the os will only recognize 1.5 under OS9. Under OSX, it will see all 2 gigs of the RAM. That may be what's occurring with your system.

Watch out for Vista...I'm experiencing similar problems. If I had the cash I'd move to Mac, or even back to XP (company laptop and my old comp is dead...hence why I have to use Vista for the moment...sadly). CS2 does seem to run on Vista though, although I've found it's slower than my old machine, even with the same amount as RAM as my old XP machine. This is apparently due to all the background processes that Vista runs (and you cannot switch all of them off). Will be interested how you do
