Anyone use a 2x convertor with the 18-200 VR lens? Going to RNNP next weekend and thinking of getting a convertor seeing as I cant afford a new lens.
Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

I don't see anyway that would work at all. I know Nikon doesn't even make one for that lens. Buy a 400mm Sigma lens on eBay for a couple hundred bucks instead and you'll be money ahead. Forget the TC with a slow zoom like that. Money down the toliet.
Mike you might want to also check into renting a longer lens for a week. Renting probably won't cost you much more than the TC and you will certainly get better images. I agree with Kent that a TC on that lens probably won't give you much quality.

I agree with Kent that you'd be throwing your money away. The lens is much too slow for a 2x TC. Renting or eBay (or borrowing) seem like much better alternatives IMO.

Thanks guys. I've had some real bad experiences with Sigma so I think renting it is!!

At one time, Sigma was at the low end of quality. Since then they have taken a new direction. Their new lenses are very high quality. I bought the Sigma 10-22mm rather than the Nikon 12-24mm and have been very happy with it. I use it almost every day. Even the Sigma consumer models are pretty solid now. Not sure what lens you can rent economically. I also have the Nikon 80-400mm VR. It works pretty well as a general purpose lens and I've taken quite a few wildlife photos with it. You would need at least a 400mm to see any real difference over your 200mm, I think. Depends on what you want to photo--you didn't say.

I'd suggest a used Sigma 400/5.6 APO Macro (the Tele-Macro variant, not the "straight" APO) off eBay. I have it, and ond a 6 MP camera it's sharp as tack one stop down. Doesn't cost much.
