For those of you who don't read the Cloudland Journal I thought you might be interested in this. We found a Canon digital camera in the Buffalo River a few days ago - it was inside one of those very expensive underwater housings and I suspect the housing cost more than the camera did. The waterproof seals did not last and the case was flooded. It was obvious the camera was not good as it was rusted in a number of places.
I decided to pull the memory card (an SD card) and see what it looked like - looked good as new to me! When I put the card in a card reader later in the day it mounted just like any old memory card. We all sat there in the workshop class and looked at several series of photos from trips that had been documented on the card including snowy hikes to Alum Cove and Lost Valley during February, 2006, a trip to Mystic Caverns the same month, several photos of cats and other misc. family stuff, plus a bunch of kayak photos that were taken in the spring. The very last photo on the card was taken on May 5th, 2006. So this memory card survived in the water-filled housing for about a year with no damage at all.
I posted a couple of the photos in the Journal and will have them posted on a couple of message boards to see if anyone knows the two guys that are in the photos. I hope to be able to get the card and photos back to the rightful owner.
So the next time you worry about getting your memory card damp, don't give it too much thought. And certainly don't buy one of those darn waterproof housings!

Hey Tim, I did read about this on your journal. I don't know about SF cards but I do know that my memory would only last about 30 seconds underwater!
