Thread Deletions

I came into this forum this morning to find a number of threads deleted, evidently by the OP (original poster). I find this very unfortunate as many people - including myself - had taken a considerable amount of time to participate in those threads.

Due to the growing abuse of the delete button, we will be modifying the forum software so that only moderators and admin will have delete privileges. If you want to delete a post, you wil need to contact a moderator (or me) to do so. The edit function will remain.

Do you mean you will be taking away delete privileges for ALL forums Jim? I don't regularly do it but every once in awhile I post an image, hate the way it looks immediately, delete it before any comments (or views for that matter) and decide to try again later after I have a chance to more fully edit it. I would hate to lose my control over that as I am not a delete button abuser.

Unfortunately, there is no way to assign "delete privileges" on an individual basis. We have had threads deleted in both the IC galleries and discussion forums, and it's becoming more common.

As long as no replies are posted, the delete function will still be available. However, once a reply is posted, you will need to contact a mod or admin to approve and make the deletion. Sound OK?

I think that's only fair since once people reply the thread in essence becomes the property of more than the poster. I'm sure if someone has a legitimate reason to delete a post and email Jim that he or the moderator can take care of it.

Art seemed to be on quite a crusade but perhaps he wasn't as interested in opposing viewpoints?? At any rate, I was planning on responding to the one post and then saw it was flagged, I suppose I should start a new one  Randy

Randy, that's exactly right, and you will still be able to edit your own posts and replies if you want to delete or change them. You will just not be able to remove other people's responses.

Sounds fine Jim. This will be no problem for me because the only time I ever delete is when I immediately don't like the look of an image I have posted.

I know this is the Hot Topics forum but I was beginning to feel it was being a bit abused by ART LUND'S GLOBAL WARMING (or not?) crusade. There was some interesting dialogue, but for the most part is was pretty transparent and agenda driven. It was beginning to feel like a sledge hammer.

Art Lund? I thought it was Art Bell. My bad.

No problem for me, Jim. The only time my topics/responses get deleted is when you delete them.

Now, now, boys and girls, let's not make this personal. Art has the same right to his opinion as you and I, and the same right to post those opinions here. Just my opinion of course.

Good choice Jim. I've seen posts deleted and reposted just to get them back to the top for more comments.

Wow. I didn't know that we could edit people's responses. Maybe I should start spouting off politics on my own posts because I know that I am always right.

It's a shame that anyone would do that; they mostly wiped out other members' contributions. I'm 100% in agreement with the changes.

No, you could NEVER do that! You can only edit and delete your own posts. But if you start a thread and then delete your original post, it would delete the entire thread - that is the issue we're now fixing. When fixed, once a reply is posted to an original post, the delete button will disappear and only moderators or admin will have the right to delete a thread.

Good idea, Jim.

This is how e-Bay works -- once you get a bid you are limited in what you can change in your listing.

Dang...Now I forgot why I was mad and arguing with Bill...

Heck Terry, I wish my wife would forget that quickly!!! :wavey:

That makes perfect sense to me. Please don't ever remove the ability to edit one's own posts though. Sometimes it takes a couple of edits to make my point sufficiently obscure.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for this. I think it's more than simply 'unfortaunte, I think that it's pretty rude for someone to simply delete an entire thread after so many people (or, really 'any' people) had contributed so much. I'm gla dyou're taking steps to ensure this won't happen in the future.

Cheers

I never deleted a thread before and would not want to. Why would I want to waste all that time and effort?

Any chance that posts are deleted inadvertently? By pushing the delete instead of the edit button? I doubt it because there is usually an "are you sure you want to delete this" response. Still, I'd ask..

In my defense:
Both Guy and Jim leaned on me about my posts.
I decided to delete my offending post. I had absolutely no idea that the word "delete" beside
my post would destroy the whole thread. I have looked, and I do not find that it says so anywhere but this particular thread.
