The Beginning
I wanted to reprocess this one for a client last week. A very difficult exposure, this was the finest display of light at sunrise I've ever seen. Captured over Mount Rundle, in Banff, Alberta. You're probably familiar with other images I took that morning, though I don't believe I've posted a landscape version here.

5D, 2-stop GND, 1 second at ISO 50, F16.

Seen it before, love it with out question, but seeing it again made me realize how far south the sun actually rises in the Rockies. I had to actually pull my maps out to double check to see how the sun could rise over Rundle when you're looking so far south.

Dammit, now I'm jonesin for some Rockies.

Yeah, and I was actually down to only 8 hours of daylight by mid-November. The nice thing though, was that the magic hour would seem to last forever.

I try to find something in your images to nitpick about but no can do in this one. The rays of light over Rundle, fantastic color in the sky and its reflection on the ice, the S-shaped curve of water in the FG....nice stuff. Is this a single exposure?

Yes, Mark. It is a single exposure. I did have to bring out the mountain a little more in post processing, but it's otherwise very accurate to the original RAW.

Truly epic Marc, that is a one in a million light show, and you have an incredible scene to put it over. It doesn't get any better than this, except your vertical versions of this scene

Just curious, how many mornings did you have to camp at this location to get this shot?

Yeah these shots you have of Rundle are just amazing Marc, never seen any photo like it before.

This sucks...that I didn't take it, or that I dont own it  . Truely one of your top 5

Bryan, I was camped in the rockies for 65 nights to get this shot and others.

I meant how many mornings did you stake out at Vermillion Lake for this shot specifically? If you say this was a first attempt, I'm gonna cry.
Posted by Marc Adamus on April 29, 2007 at 9:35 PM
Uh, this was my first attempt. Sorry to break it to you. But prior to this, I had endured a massive storm cycle (you'll recall the early November floods) with 15 consecutive days with snow or rain, and very little good light elsewhere in the rockies.

Hrmph. You've payed off the weather gods, haven't you.
