Do you need a model release for public photos taken of crowds, people playing sports in a park, riding bikes in an open space? Any words of wisdom.

In general, no. "Editorial" content, such as book photos, does not generally need a photo release. (Just think how many embarrassing pictures of public figures would never see the light of day...)

If you use a photo for advertising purposes, the answer is always - 100% - "yes". That includes book promo, and may extend to certain types of books...

Of course, it's always nice to ask; try to get releases if you can. But it's nigh-on impossible to get everyone in a large crowd. Also, be careful with images of children, and be sensitive to various cultures (mostly Native Americans and the Amish in this country...); ask first before snapping images of potentially sensitive subjects.

Thanks Les. I just read the same think about "editorial" use on Dan Hellers site.
