...to break the "rules". I've just been awarded one of two contracts to shoot an upcoming concert by British band "Delirious" at our NHL hockey stadium here in Ottawa. Besides myself, the promoters chose another photographer who is very good at covering such an event in an accurate, documentary style. But they told me that the thing that landed me my portion of the job was a project that I shot recently for a local band in which I broke all the rules in regard to shutter speed/moving subjects and white balance. They said that they were glad that I wasn't afraid to break the rules in order to produce such wild, off the wall images.
This whole thing came as complete surprize to me. Wish me luck. I think (hope) I know what they want from me.
Congrats! The reasons they selected you says a lot about your skills. I have tried to emphasize when I give photo talks that the rules of composition are a good place to start, but they never should taken as gospel.. Only when you truly know how to shoot "properly" does breaking the rules become the right way to shoot, when you recognize that the subject demands it.
