In a recent thread about critiques one of the seasoned members stated a policy of posting comments on the 10 images immediate preceding or following his own image post. I liked the concept because it required a fair approach - no cherry-picking. But, I felt I could hold my own, posting critiques on just about every image posted in flora.
I say, "UNCLE!" Flora has become so very busy that I can't begin to keep up. So, I am adopting the 10/1 rule.
Hey Maureen, I agree that the flora catagory is very busy since the flowers have poped open. In the past is was easy to comment on everyones images. 10/1 rule sounds about right.
Maureen, the flora gallery (and to a lesser degree macro/close-up) is a somewhat seasonal gallery. Since the vast majority of our members are from the nothern hemisphere, flora really gets busy this time of year. Under these circumstances, the 10/1 guideline is indeed a good one.
While Flora is indeed somewhat seasonal I think as a forum it has really come into its own in the past 6-9 months. There are a number of regular contributors putting up some pretty impressinve stuff. There have also been notable improvements in the skill and vision of various participants. The bar is constantly being raised and we're all the better for it. We don't have the level of participation of ES&S or Avian - yet. Stay tuned and come check it out.
My point precisely, Bill. I understand the seasonal flow in Flora - but, I sense that the bar has gone way up in the quality and quantity of images posted every week. If I tried to comment on all that are posted every day, I would not have much time to shoot!
Something I didn't expect when I began posting in Flora was how interesting it is to see how similar species to those I'm familiar with locally vary in other areas of the country and world that I'm not familiar with. ...David
Please understand - I am not complaining! I just have felt bad about not being able to comment on all the images being posted. I don't even have time to go to the other forums much, because I do like to take a look at all the Flora posts. I have learned so much this year, by focusing (as in specializing) my attention and work in Flora.
Maureen: I took your comments as a compliment to the forum. Its too late for me to do the requisite research but my hunch is that Flora is probably second only to ES&S in terms of average comments per imgae. A tip of the cap to those participating. >=))>
I agree, Flora is really rolling! The quality and sheer quantity of posts has been amazing and I have a sense that it's going to continue! I have always tried to comment way more than I post because I learn more by really looking closely at what all you talented & creative photographers are doing and see where I can improve. But I fear that Maureen is right that something has got to give and, since I don't want to pick and choose, I think the 10 / 1 idea is a great one. Keep up the good work everyone!
Maureen, I feel your pain. I have just realized that if I am away from the forum for just a couple of days, I just can't keep up with all the new posts. I think the 10/1 idea is also a good method. You are all so so right as far as the quality and quantity over the last few months. Hats off to everyone contributing in Flora! The bar just keeps getting raised higher and higher. I know I've seen some improvement in my work just as a result of what I see posted in the forum on a regular basis. Speaking of being away, we were impacted by a storm on Wednesday evening that knocked out power for 300, 000 homes in the area and we just got power back on late last night. I'm still trying to get my DSL connection to work consistently so needless to say, I've missed about 4 days already of viewing and commenting. I'lll catch up soon eveyone!
