At this time of year on certain shingle beachs you can alomost walk on top of these ladies in their nests. Shot taken on a Kerry shingle beach. Canon 20D, 300mm IS f4, 1.4 x extender, tripod. 1/640, iso 100, f/5.6, -1/3 ev. Cheers MJ
BTW any advice on checking if the above lens is focusing absolutlely correctly. I have a suspicion it's a little out.
Hi Michael - the small white pebble at the bottom right and the very tip of the RP's tail appear sharp - I suspect the lens is working fine.
It's an f4 lens so f5.6 will get you no where on the DoF scale especially if you then added a 1.4 tc - to get some meaty DoF with that combo you are going to have go to f8 - f11 - here's a link you might find a bit useful http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html
Nice shot though - only nit would be get lower to the shingle - otherwise, very nice comp

All the best

The warm lighting makes this picture for me, my only nit is the high angle, waders on shingle look much better at low angles.
