I was wondering if someone might offer some suggestions to me. I have been very fortunate in the almost year I have lived in East TN, just outside Townsend area to visit cades cove on a very regular basis. Each trip I learn more about the area, plus talking to local folks and other photographers, I learn even more. I have done really good on locating coyotes, bears, otters, turkeys, salamanders and of course the deer. But I would love to see other animals that i know are there. So if anyone knows any location within Cades Cove or even The Smokies to find: red fox, racoons and bobcats I would greatly appreciate it. I am just trying to see all I can before I do end up moving. Last time I posted I mentioned i was going to move to near Johnson City, TN. Well I did lots of looking, but never found a place I really liked. So I am for at least now, going to move near Asheville, NC. I have found an area I like and just have to find the right house. Looking forward to still enjoying all I knew I would living near JC, but will be closer to The Smokies and BRP. Would still love to meet up with other photographers in the area once I get moved.
Right now, the bear action in cades cove is really great. There is one family sow with 3 that is in the first part of the loop across from the 1st donation box. They show up in the trees around 2pm all last week, or go earlier and find them on the other side of the hill closer to sparks lane. Another sow with 3 cubs are in the pasture area just past Carter Shields Cabin. I also saw them off Hyatt way out in the pasture last week. A sow with 2 newborn cubs are half way through the loop about a half mile on that big hill just before you get to the primative baptist church dirt road. On the right.
Here is one cute one from last week. I am trying to get out and enjoy them alot before I end up moving soon.
I have updated my website with some newer images in the wildlife gallery. Bears are all new for 2007 and new coyote images as well.
Wow, I'd love to see the bears! I did see a coyote last time I was in Cades Cove. I'm not very good with shooting wildlife though, I do better with subjects that don't move! You're moving closer to me...I'm in Rutherfordton, about an hour away from Asheville. Once you get settled let me know. Leann lives nearby too...maybe we can get together and shoot!
I tried to post a photo, it didnt want to go through for some reason. Will try again very soon. Yeah that little one was so adorable! Havent seen him since, but I have been looking.
Sure Alice, I would love to hook up with you, Leann and anyone else over in that area sometimes once I get moved and go out and explore new surroundings. Or all head over to Cades Cove. We will hopefully be moved by the end of the month, if not sooner. I am already missing cades cove once I move, although I just got back from there and will be out again tommorrow.
I can certaily appreciate your quest to photograph wildlife in the Smokies. I live 7 hours away but everytime I get anywhere near Cades Cove I have to make the loop and see what I can see. I don't know where to find the animals you are looking for but I usually find the bears and an occasional coyote. Last October I photographed two sows with 3 cubs each. I got a good number of photos of the mother with two metal ear tags and her 3 cubs. I think I saw her on your website. I was there again last month and was glad to find her with all 3 cubs once again. Unfortunately I did not get any good photos this trip. Never the less it is great just to see them.
You didn't mention the hogs. I often see them around the bamboo behind the cemetaries. I got a shot of two little piglets last october but I have not been able to get a close shot of the adults.
I did hear about many wild hogs being seen in the field near hyatt, but somehow, I have never seen them. lol Wish I had. Will check out the place you just mentioned above tommorrow to see if I see any hogs there. I was able to get some chipmunks and otters recently, so thats not too bad.
I saw your photos of the sow with 3 cubs with the 2 metal tags. (will go back and look at your website more tonight) I remember her, saw her many times last year. You did a good job of getting them to pose for you. They havent done that yet for me. I am just now getting better shots, since buying new lenses this year. So I am happy with what I have shot thus far, lots more to add sometime soon. But I still feel, the best is yet to come. I have done really good with the coyotes, I see one or two just about every trip. Thanks for the kind words Paul, hopefully I can get caught up on my website sometime soon. Better to be out enjoying all of God's beautiful scenery and animals, than cooped up in front of this computer.
Your wildlife pics are great! I shoot quite a bit in the Smokies, but haven't run across any good areas for the wildlife you asked about. I've had good luck with the bears and often see the coyotes hanging out along the dirt road to Primitive Church. I moved to the Asheville area about a year ago. You'll love it here especially being centrally located to so many great photo ops. Let me know if you want to meet up for a shoot sometime.
Looks like I will have some new friends waiting in NC to meet and go shoot with when we finally get moved, hopefully soon. I am almost packed. I am very excited now. Linda, you have a great website. Love the Asheville skyline photo, hope you will share your spot with me. And the bear in the tree from the cove, too cool. I havent got them in a perfect open spot just yet, but there is always tomomorrow. Usually when I see one these days, I have to wade through the ignorant tourists too busy yelling and getting WAY too close, which of course ends up scaring the animals away. I love it when its just me and God out there in the cove. Nothing but the sound of the wind, birds and beauty all around me. Doesnt happen that often, but I have been blessed with many alone moments on sparks and hyatt. For those that go often, you know those moments are few and far between.
