I was very pleased to shoot this area since I had never seen an image of it before arriving there-I didn't even know it existed, I was set on shooting the Na Pali Coast.
Let know what you think especially about the red and green colors and the WB setting (i'll post the cooler based WB tommorow), I've had qualms about them...This is two images blended together, one for the canyon and one for the sky. Thanks for dropping in.
Nice shot, Art! The composition and scene are awesome - the mist in the background is great. I do think the bottom half is much too dark. Just for my own curiosity I opened the photo up in PS and made a curves layer with a gradient mask to brighten up the bottom half and I think it looks way better. It makes the colors pop out a lot more too.
Can you e-mail me your version or post it here? I would like to see what you came up with.... I just realized this is only one exposure... exposed for the clouds. I didn't do the normal dbl exposure...major brain spazz. I was going to post the horizontal version which has two exposures and then uploaded the vertical without updating the post.
Cool shot. I've been there about dozen times and each time it's just as cool. I agree with Darren, maybe bringing out those greens and I would say reds as well. There's nothing like the red dirt of Kauai.
There's nothing like the red dirt of Kauai. No, there really isn't - especially when it gets on your socks, your shoes, your pants...
I'll (third, fourth?) the suggestion on bringing up the saturation on the reds and greens; this seems a bit brown for what I remember (but that was 9 years ago...)
Art,
I have to agree with everyone else. Sounds like you have a handle on the dark bottom, though. Kauai is my favorite place in the world! I really like the mood in your shot. I like shooting the canyon from a helicopter, as well as Na Pali.

The goal was to brighten up the foreground and then get stronger reds and greens for the canyons...in comparing the original photo post to this image I hope you find it to be an improvement.
Here's how I set out to accomplish this. I created a slight "saturation" boost in Lab mode by pushing in the a and b "channels(?)" to create better greens and reds in the canyon hills in the distance-the foreground "horn" is pretty brown no matter how you slice it so I let it be.
I took Jack's suggestion and in the RAW editor took the same exposure bumped it up +1.25 ev(?) brought it back in Photoshop, layered it on top of the non- bumped up exposure, created a mask and then played with the gradient tool until it looked right. Here is the resulting image implementing the forum suggestions.
Fantastic. This is really a different shot from what I have ever seen before. This is really unique. Like I said, I like, no, now I love the mood created in this photo. This is art, no play on your name, either.
Great job as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for your comments Morris, I was smitten with Hawaii as well. You have a great gallery-i really liked your Hawaii and Glacier images. You've made me put Glacier on the to do list!
The Waimea Canyon has to be one of my favorite places to shoot...man it's awesome! And it doesn't get any national acclaim. In fact I almost didn't get here, never heard of it till I stepped on the island-everyone talks about the Na Pali Coast for Kauia photography. My family mentioned it off hand, like..."Oh yeah check out this Waimea Canyon place, it's no Grand Canyon or Utah but it's cool." Was it ever...
As people sided up to the lookout point during this shoot, I could hear them whisper under their breath, "Oh my God, this..this, this, is more majestic than the Grand Canyon." I chuckled to myself, and thought I would not argue this point and pressed the shutter.
I loved Waimea Canyon when I was there, but the weather wasn't very co-operative, and my pictures (print at the time) came out poorly. You've made a great shot out of it. I really like the reworked version.
Thanks, Art, for your comments. You will love Glacier as well. It is such a special place. I can't believe I don't see more on the sites from there. I can't wait to get back there, I only had 4 days there on my trip a couple of years ago. There are a lot of trails to hike in Waimea, none of which I have ever had time to do, but I have seen some killer shots from those trails. I did hike the Awa Awa Pui trail. 8 miles round trip, and the thing is it is 4 miles down, and then 4 miles UP! But what views from there. I envy your time in Hawaii. Got to get back there soon. Good luck.

Jack, thanks for the editing information I'll implement this as you're on to something there!
Brian, Les, and Morris, ok red dirt - I got it! I'll repost after the 24 hr time limit.
Thanks, everyone!
