Alright - my last final for the semester is tomorrow and my D80 arrives on Tuesday, so I think it's only appropriate that I inaugurate my first DSLR with some wildflowers. It's been a long time coming!
So where are the flowers particularly nice right now? An easy hike and reasonable proximity to Denver are required since I'm totally out of shape these days. I'm rusty on my trail knowledge since I missed most of last Summer due to illness.
Rebecca - it's probably a little early for dense showings of wildflowers near the metro area, but things are definitely starting to pop. I was out at Flatirons Mesa yesterday and there was plenty of wallflower with another dozen or so species showing signs of a strong bloom in the coming weeks. Check out Michael's post from Saturday and the links to his site to see more of what's going on along the Front Range.
Saw some Golden Banner yesterday while I was driving around. Lots of Mustard and other early flowers out at Sawhill Ponds (not what I'd call spectacular flowers...) Saw a couple of clusters of pink something-or-others along the Boulder Canyon trail, but there wasn't a huge break-out of blooms aside from that and some flowering trees.
It's a bit early for Blue Flag, Lupine, and composites. With all this moisture, it might be a stellar year along the Front Range, though.
Suggestion: take a relatively easy trail that you know; you might not find endless fields of flowers, but you'll probably find something to spur your interest.
