Sweet light and great color; perfect exposure, too. I like that you've got the whole formation warmly lit and the sky is still holding it's color well. Very nice!
Can't help much with the ID as I've never been to Arches, but based on what I've seen in pictures, I'd agree with Bret that this looks like the Tower of Babel.
Hmm.... I always thought this was the The Organ!
(It is actually listed on some of the older maps of Arches as "The Phallus". I guess they originally thought that by naming it in Latin it might get less attention. They seem to have left it off the maps completely over the past few years. Wonder why? )
CAZ, I see formations like this and always think they'd make a great postcard that says, "Thinking of You!" Probably 90% of the guys would send it to their girls back home.
About the shot - Excellent! Are the Three Gossips, or whatever they're called, included on that ridge? I don't know too much about the feature names of Arches that are not arches.
As it is, this is an amazing image, especially considering the resolution provided by the camera. Comp-wise, I think it would be better from a lower angle and closer to the bush. Lower angle would include a little more of the sky, which is very nice. Everything else works very well for me.
every time I drive my Phallic Rock I chuckle outloud
Bret: Was this a Freudian slip? Did you actually mean to say "when I drive by Phallic Rock I chuckle outloud"?
Todd: I never thought about the card caption possibilities for images of that rock. Now, of course, I won't be able to drive by it without thinking of them. Doh!
Darren: My apologies for high-jacking your thread. I should have started out by saying that regardless of the name of the rock formation, I like your image. Very nice composition!
Also, it's been interesting to note the confusion of the name of a rock formation that many of us have previously photographed and have driven past on dozens of occasions. Makes me wonder if I've really been paying attention to what's around me or if I'm just too focused on getting to "the shot".

13 repliesAt any rate, it's a really nice photo. Wildflowers this year have been less than optimal.

Nice work, CAZ. The strategic placement of the foreground brush is nice touch!
Darren - nice shot, but I wish you were a little closer to the flowers.
CAZ and Todd: Part of me is still in high school because every time I drive my Phallic Rock I chuckle outloud.
