My wife and I went walking yesterday and she found me the only lavender shooting star in 600+ acres of white ones. I've been trying out radio slaved flash in this situation and like what I'm seeing.

Canon 400d F14 1/60 second
Sigma 500 flash 1/2 power.

Thanks for looking,

Bruce

Bruce, I like the composition a lot and the dark BG. The light is a bit harsh IMO, and I am one of the few on this forum that use flash for macro photography, though less and less all the time. My question is "Is the flash being fired directly at the subject, or are you diffusing or redirecting the light"? A little re-direction off a reflector or softening with a diffuser would make the light look more natural. Just a suggestion.

These lavender guys are a real treat to find, and these are in their prime. But I tend to agree with Dominic with regard to the light - just a little hot for my taste in some parts. Nice find Bruce!

I would love to see some of these one day, very neat flowers. The lavendar color is nice and I like the comp overall. The suggestions to tone down the fill light is a good one. Sounds like you had a great day out hunting flowers with your wife! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Bruce - I can only echo what others have said here. The light on some parts is just fantastic, but there is harshness there as well. I've always loved these flowers - a few years back, Mt. Vernon prairie had a lot of the purple flowers blooming. Thanks for posting!

I agree that it's harsh and in the future I plan to add some sort of diffuser. However I'm tickled about being able to stop the wind motion. I've tried for years to do that and really haven't gotten much better than cover it with a tent and hope which really isn't all that good. This is an exciting development for me and I'm looking forward to practicing it more.
