My wife and I would like to venture east this fall and would appreciate some help with timing since we'll need to get our flights soon.
We would like to visit Baxter SP and Acadia, in that order and will have ~ 10 days. We'll hike a lot, maybe backpack some and stay in a nice lodge or three. Does 10/5-15 sound about right?
Though I've not been to either in autumn, I imagine from what I know about the NH northcountry and coastlines, that it may be late for peak in Baxter. Seems about perfect for Acadia thought.
In the Whites of NH and Maine, peak is usally around the 10th, variable around a week. The nice thing though is if you miss it, just head south or down in elevation and your right back into it!
Good luck, and hope others have more intimate insite!
October 5 should be the late peak for a "normal" year around Baxter. I have not seen a normal year for a while though! MT Desert Island (Acadia) the park is usually closer to Oct 20th. If you are trying to time the trip for the foliage I would pick a time frame that wold have you in Acadia for the peak. There are lots of areas in Maine that have great foliage that will peak a few days later than the Baxter area, and remember that up in Baxter the forest is probably 70 % evergreens. Better hard wood forests can usually be found a little further south than Baxter. Baxter can look beautiful in the fall but south of Moosehead lake down to about Bethel and through the western Maine mountains is in my opinion a prettier area in the Autumn. Acadia in the autumn is Awesome. Make sure you plan to be there for as many days as you can. It is a great place even if the leaves are not changing color!!
Hi Dave! We just had an NEPN get together this past weekend and it was discussed that perhaps we would hold our fall get together at Acadia for those same approximate dates (at least around the 20th). If we do, maybe we can arrange to meet you and if you'd like, to accompany us on some shoots as well. It is still in the very basic planning stage at this time however. Keep watching.

We'd be much obliged for any helpful suggestions.
Thanks!
