I'm selling what remains of my Nikon kit comprising the following items:-
D1x - £500
Sigma 300-800 f/5.6 - SOLD
Speedlight SB-80DX - SOLD
Nikon TC-14EII (modified for use with Sigma)- SOLD
Sigma APO Teleconvertor 1.4x EX - SOLD
Sigma APO Teleconvertor 2x EX - £65
Kenko 1.4x teleplus pro 300 - £25

All equipment is in excellent to mint condition. Please note that the Sigma lens predates the DG designation. The lens has a LensCoat included but before this was camo taped so has some residue under the LensCoat. I do not have the boxes for the lens, the SB-80DX or the TC's but I do have them for the D1X body.
Images shot with kit can be seen on this forum and at http://www.jesone.eclipse.co.uk/ and at http://www.pbase.com/jesone/
In the first instance enquiries should be made through the email facility on this forum.
UK only please.

Hi John,

I'm thinking about getting a big lens like this, I currently use a Nikkor 70-400 however am getting very frustrated by how close you have to be in order to fill the frame.

As a bit of a newbie would I need to get a new tripod, I currently have a Manfrotto 055PROB which says it has a max load of 7Kg. I see the DG version lens weighs 5.8kg so it should be OK shouldn't it? I'll need to get a new head, what would you reccommend?

Thanks

Hi Phillip - its yours.

Hi Peter,
Long lenses require good technique to achieve sharp images. The cost of magnifying the image is also magnifying any shake present in the support used for the camera and lens and good technique helps to mitigate this. I'm not familiar with your tripod but I'm thinking that the lens plus body plus head are going to add up to more than the 7Kg its rated for so I'd suggest it may be a little lightweight for this lens.
I'd also strongly recommend a gimbal type head, wimberleys are very good, Kirk have the king cobra and Manfrotto have the 3421 Gimbal head. I have the Kirk but would buy the wimberley.
Having said all that I have successfully made sharp images using bean bags, tree trunks, and my rucksack as support in the past.
Hope this answers your query.

Hi John,

I'm sorry to get your hopes up but I've thought long and hard and I think I'm going to have to leave it for a little while. I still need to get to grips with my current kit I think, I'm probably going to buy a bag hide instead and see how close I can get! The other reason is that I've just had a £900 service on the car and still need to buy two new rear tyres so am feeling a little bit poor at the moment!

Thanks for the info on the tripod head.
