Ozark Wildflower ID?
I found this interesting species growing near Table Rock lake on Indian Point (very near Silver Dollar City) and I'd never seen anything like them. I don't have Don's Ozark Wildflowers book and I didn't see them in his Illinois Wildflowers book so I was looking for some help with an ID. About 6 - 8" tall growing on a spiked stalk. What have I got here? Thanks in advance!

I believe that's sensitive briar, Wayne. Don says they're also known as devil's shoestrings because of the prickly stems. These are beautiful!

Yep - Bill's got it. I see them in prairies around here all the time. They really grab your legs when you walk by. Nice job on these, too! Very sharp where it needs to be. Thanks for posting!

Hey Wayne, great shot, it looks Bill has nailed the I.D. I have Don's book and the Sensitive Briar is on page 161.

Thanks guys, I guess when I stop spending all my money I'll have to get Don's Ozark Wildflowers book too. On second thought, I do have a birthday coming up ...

Hey Wayne,

You didn't see this plant in my Illinois Wildflowers book because it does not occur in Illinois. See what those Illinoisians or Lincolnites are missing out on! I can call them that because that is where I grew up.

If you weren't in such a hurry to get to Silver Dollar City to spend your money, you would have noticed the sensitive leaves that close when touched...

Nice that you got them in peak with most of their stamens yellow-tipped with pollen.

I wish I had known you were going to Branson, I would have told you about the super glades at Henning Conservation Area. Of course, you can read more about them in my Scenic Driving the Ozarks book. By golly, for your birthday, ask for both my Ozark books and you will be set for your next venture into that region which is the size of the state of Florida. You can get them at www.cloudland.net or Amazon.com. I don't know how you left home without them.

Best,
Don

Amazon.com - who the heck is that? Cloudland, that is the place to buy guidebooks! Amazon is one of the absolute worst places to do business (I'm talking about from the publishing end here)...

Great detail. And quite an interesting plant. Well captured.
