First one I've ever seen so I can't be more accurate than just Tortoise Beetle.
It's approximately 4-5mm long and sitting on a groundsel flower head
Full frame and uncropped image of 3 frames focus stacked to give me the depth of field I wanted without getting into defraction softening.
Canon 20D
Canon MP-E65 at x3 magnification (plus the x1.6 from the sensor)
1/60sec@f11 iso 100 raw
2 x 580Ex flashguns used triggered by a wireless thingy on the hotshoe.
Andy I used a free program called CombineZM. In my opinion a very useful technique made alot easier with the additional software It will handle full frame images and output a focus stacked Tiff file.
Thanks for the link on the CombineZM. A very useful tool. Good work with the beetle. They are often well camouflaged and difficult to see. This one is Cassida vibex. Looks like you photographed it on a Field Horsetail, which is the same plant where I found my tortoise beetle.
Good job on the focus stacking and the flash has brought out that metallic green stripe really well. Not overly keen on the black background though, perhaps a piece of green or brown card would have worked well here.
