I was hiking early Saturday morning at RMNP, turned a corner and realized I was no more than 20 feet away. After carefully backing away I grabbed a nice portrait with my 400mm lens. I was still pretty close even at this point, this picture is not cropped vertically at all.

Moose

Scared the heck out of me at the time.

How a creature weighing in at half a ton can move about the woods so silently is beyond me. At least it wasn't a bull in velvet!

I like this shot Harold. That's great to get such a close up. Funny how you were startled but he doesn't look shook up at all.

Good job with the shot and keeping your composure, Harold!
This is my kind of wildlife shot -- they walk in front of me and pose
Congrats.

The title of your post cracked me up Harold. You're lucky the moose didn't step on you. Nice shot.

Where exactly did you see her? I am guessing that this is the same one which just had its young one killed by a car two weeks ago near Lake Estes.

At least it wasn't a bull in velvet!

Or chiffon or satin or some other evening gown fabric. He'd have been so embarrassed about being seen like that he woulda stomped you for sure!

Excellent shot Harold! In fact, your Fauna portfolio is really terrific. My favorite has got to be the Broncos' zebra - Elway's teeth and Plummer's facial hair! Actually, the Pentagoose shot is truly exceptional.

Thanks for sharing and providing the link.

CAZ: Good one.

A few years ago, while hiking down from Michigan Lakes, I rounded a corner and found myself 10' from a moose calf standing right on the trail. We both stood there for a few seconds, just staring at each other. My first thought was, oh sh*t, where's momma? She was just off-trail, and the two bounded off downhill without ever putting a hoof print in my face. An encounter to treasure, for sure.

Nice having a 400mm available. Great shot.
I usually leave mine at home when hiking any distance, unless I'm pretty certain it will be used.

Did you see any flying Squirrils? Awesome Bullwinkle shot!

Thanks for the comments all - Erik she was on the Lake Bierstadt loop trail when I (almost literally) ran into her.

Harold, great shot. I've heard moose can be pretty dangerous, so I'm glad you didn't get stomped yourself. Nice catchy title too.
