Hello all!
Question to those that own the 5D *and* the Canon EF 70-200mm, 4.0 IS USM.
Yesterday I purchased this lens, an I am very pleased with the optical quality, based on a few test-shots I did.
However, there are some mechanical concerns that I don't now of if my lens has a defect:
When the lens is attached to the 5D, *it is possible to slightly twist or turn it*! (I don't mean the turn needed to attach it properly, it is a turn after attaching it "properly")
It is only a millimeter of movement(probably even less) counterclockwise and clockwise, so there is a play , but also accompanied by a sound of surfaces scratching against each other.
My 24-105mm sticks to the 5D as if both are one piece, no movement, no play at all.
I have no experience with different lenses on my 5D, but I would like to know if someone has experienced this as well.
This might be normal, and maybe it is not the whole lens that moves, maybe it is only the outer (plastic)-tube of the lens that can be turned a bit.
My worries are that this might affect the sharpness and other issues and maybe something is wrong with the lens-mount.
Oh yes, I also noticed, that the information in Rawshooter, the one about lens, focal lenght, aperture etc. seems to be incomplete!
It reads: Canon EOS 5D: IMG_1939.CR2 100mm(P(D n),f 5.0 1/2000 sec., iso 800.
What irritates me is that stuff in the brackets! This is where "EF 70-200mm f4 L IS USM" should be stated, as it is with my other lens.
What's going on here!?
Please let me know if this is normal! Can one check if their 70-200mm 4.0, IS USM slightly moves, and if the information about exposure and lens-type stored in the Raw-file is incomplete? Should I consider another version of that lens.
Thanks very much for any info on this!
Regards, Dietrich
Dietrich,,,,I'm not sure about the lens mount, but my guess is that the info in RawShooter is incomplete because this lens was introduced after the last update to RS software. To be sure it is not a lens glitch, check to see if the info appears in the DPP 3.0 software that comes with Canon bodies.
Thank you David! I am going to install the sofware, and then have a look. What still irritates me is that movement.
Keep the infos coming, guys, I desperately need your help..
Thanks, Dietrich

I have the 5D and the 70-200mm f/4 (non IS) and my lens mount has some play in it as well. It's slightly worse with the 1.4x converter. It's annoying but I don't think it causes any problems in terms of sharpness, etc. (as far as I can tell). I think it just has to do with the tolerances of the machined parts.
I do not have the exact combination of equipment you have but a little bit of play between the lens and camera is nothing to worry about. I have a lot more play between my 1D MkII and 500mm lens than you describe having with the 5D and 70-200 IS lens. And, yes, adding a 1.4x tc will add even more play. There's nothing wrong with your lens. That little bit of side-to-side play will not affect image sharpness.
As regards RawShooter, since Pixmantec was bought out by Adobe there are no more updates for RawShooter. The 70-200 f 4L IS lens was released after the buyout. Heck, I have RawShooter, too, and it won't even process the CR2 files from my 30D correctly. Again, there's nothing wrong with your lens or camera. Use them both and enjoy the excellent images you will get from the 70-200!
Ok, thanks so much to all of you for this info! This is a relief I can tell you I was really worried. The thing is I am going on a short trip to venice on sunday, and I already saw myself there without this lens, because the shop where I bought the lens is out of stock (just a horror-scenario).
It's good to have this and your experience, for future lenses. It's just that my other lens , the 24-105mm, sticks rock-solid on the 5D.
Thanks and Regards,
Dietrich
I just bought the 70-200 4.0 non-IS last week. Other than to test sharpness, I have not used it yet. I just put it on to give you another opinion. Mine has a very slight amount of movement. When I put my 28-70 on, no movement, very tight. It would seem the very minute amount of play is normal for this lens.

Hi Dietrich,
I have the 70-200 f/4 IS mounted on 20D. There is absolutely no play. It is very tight. 70-200 f/4 IS version boasts of weather sealing. I tried my other lenses....24mm, 100mm macro and 1.4x(without any lens mounted)...they all have this slight play (kluk kluk noise when you twist the attached lens)....
Ditto on the above..I have the 5d with the 70-200 f4 is .. I have maybe a mill or 2 or play.. the contacts are the crucial issue .. I have sent back a lens in which it would not even click...To me it is nice to know that it is locked and not just jammed..
Thanks again for the additional experiences and observations. It seems that this play has to be accepted, and in fact I was very surprised when I got the 5D with the 24-105 (my first (D)SLR), that they both fit so tight without any play. It is quite understandable with the variety of lenses out there, that some play is there. One thing comes to my mind: The 24-105 was designed to be the kit-lens for the 5D so maybe Canon made sure that this combination has no play, for whatever reason - I am just thinking loud...
Thanks, Dietrich
I asked a similar question a while back and was reassured it's perfectly normal.Plenty of play between my Canon 100-400mm and 5D. Useful for levelling those horizons
