Yeah, we all know which falls these are. No off trail adventuring for me this week. I snapped this one on Tuesday, on a rare occasion when these ferns weren't moving around. The processing was a little tricky though. I used a polarizer and 2-stop soft GND reversed to cover the lower most portions and bring out the foliage in the ULC which is usually dark.
This image contains part of 3 exposures. One for the main body of the image at F22, 8 seconds, ISO 100. And two others made at f/4, 1/120 second, ISO 1200 using selective focuses. The two 1200 ISO images were manually blended in to freeze some foliage moving around at lower left and middle to ensure everything is sharp, but 95% + of the image is the ISO 100 exposure.
I like how the lower part is dark to brighten the ferns...thats great.....the water seems to have a magenta tint to it...not sure if that was done on purpose or not....
It wouldn't have occurred to me to merge different exposures on this one. That's a great idea! I think I've always shot this with a landscape orientation, too... have to go look at that. The details on the ferns and the curve of the basalt layer across the top of the image are really nice!
I was up there last Saturday shooting from the same spot, it it was comical -- at one point, there were close to 30 people milling around behind the falls and around the splash pool! A good portion were two vans worth of church group kids (many with those shoes that have the built-in wheel in the heel - a brilliant idea around cliffs), and the rest were Saturday hikers. I managed a couple of shots, but it seemed everytime one group would leave, another would appear around the corner... then during a true moment of solitude, the sun decided to come out! My punishment for even thinking of photographing here on a Saturday in May...

Excellent idea with the high ISO exposures... really classic shot, too...
The composition is nice, but its lacking that atypical "punchy" Adamus image feel to it. I'd say bump the contrast and brightness (selectively) a bit. The other thing that nags me with this one is the GND line on the leaves at the bottom of the frame. I'd dodge out those four fern stalks on the right and the vanilla leaf center, and leave the rest as is to define the plants a bit more and create some non-uniformity.
