Shot this morning at Garden of the Gods. The red light reflected off the North Gateway was intense this morning to say the least. It was also a pretty productive morning for me.

Canon Rebel XT, 10-22 at 10mm, f14, 1/20 no filters.

Processed 2 files from RAW for highlights and shadows. Used a soft brush to blend.

Wow, I'm not sure I've seen the reflected light in the Garden captured this well before. Nice goin'!

Nice glow! The 10mm angle is pretty wide, nice.

Is the left side sloped or is that distortion from the wide angle?

Do you use DxO?

Nice job on the blend.

Thanks. It was NICE there this morning and lots of photogs out. Todd, coming from you that means alot. I've seen some of your old GOG books and you had some excellent glow in those.

Kalin,

Regarding the lens question, its both. It is sloped coming down, but the trees get stretched in the corner by the UWA. As long as you keep the lens parallel to the ground, it keeps things nice and square, but to make it a rectangle, it does have to stretch the corners of the image (if that makes sense). I don't use DXO, but as I understand it there is correction software for this lens in their portfolio. It should also get rid of the CA (which does exist, but can be managed) The 17-40L does this on a full frame camera too from what I've seen. I have alot to learn about using this particular lens effectively, but it is fun.

this is a really nice conversion of two images Mel! Most blended images look garish but your's looks very real.

Mel, I like your take on this view. I did something similar from the other side of the path behind the restrooms only much darker than yours! I like this one!

Great job on the blend Mel! I like the low angle comp as well.

Nice shot. Like the comp and the light! :toast:

Hey nice job Mel! I have DXO and it does a great job of correcting lens distortion among other things. I finally got my GOG photo from last week color corrected by going back to the original RAW and setting a Custom WB color temp to 4000K. Fixed it right up.

Here's the closest i can get to what you did!

James, I'd have liked some of those clouds in exchange. I like that composition too. I've been striking out lately with either fog (but not the good interesting kind) or crystal clear. Looks tricky to process though. I was probably only 50 feet west from where you shot.

John, glad you got the white balance resolved. The Garden seems to trick the in camera AWB unless I force it to daylight. I think I told you in that post that I'd had AWB give me green snow before.x() I might give DXO a try, it does sound like a nice package.

Thanks to everyone else for the comments.

In regards to the way the blend was done, I made the two exposures from RAW 1-2 stops apart. Then, I used a really large brush (~1100 pixels) with a very soft edge on the layer mask for the upper layer. It doesn't always work, but its like having a soft GND with a flexible transition line.

Very nice Mel - the glow on the white rock is sweet. I also like the refresing ground-level perspective. Nice!
