This is probably basic stuff for some of you. I have a newspaper that wants me to resize images to 8.5x11@300dpi. When I try to change the height to 8.5, the width goes to 12.75, keeping the aspect ratio. In the past, when I've deselcted aspect ratio, Images become distorted. There has to be a simple way to accomplish this that I'm missing. I'm using Elements 5.0. Thanks in advance.
The only way to do it without distortion is cropping. Size it to 8.5x12.75, then crop down to 8.5x11. This can be hard to do in some cases where the composition relies on elements all the way out to the edges.
Dan, under the crop tool, enter the height as 8.5 and width as 11.0. Then set the resolution to 300 dpi. The crop tool will maintain that AR and size the photograph automatically once you finalize your crop selection. This will do everything you need in one step.
I do this all the time because I print 5x7s of baseball shots pretty frequently. At 360 dpi, but the process would be the same:
Open the image, click on the crop tool, a banner appears across the top that includes boxes for width, height, and resolution. Enter your values and crop away. It works like a charm.
