Tulip details
With the cost of gas what it is I decided to shoot tulips on my kitchen table rather than the Skagit Valley this year. Having never really shot macro before I'm not all that confident in what I'm doing but at least experimentation is cheap with digital.

On one hand I feel bad because some people probably like this shot and haven't said so during the course of 58 views so I felt like I should comment. On the other hand I really don't like shots like this and that's totally my view and shouldn't be taken in any way as critique. I'm just not a flower close-up type I guess, and I've seen way too many. So come on people, lets hear some opinions from you flower junkies out there!

I'm not a flower type of guy either but I have to tell you that this particular macro is Awesome to look at! I'm just an amatuer with photography and I'm sure I am lacking in lots of aspects, everyday I learn something new to me which is probably basic to everyone else here, but I am learning! What I really enjoy most about this is that the center focus is a surround of the actual center, it's different then most flower macro shots that I have seen.

I work offshore in the oil and gas industry and I can tell you fuel prices are going to increase, it's not the oil companies trying to get richer, it's the new rules and regulations and reapairs from the huricanes. You can thank your government for that! I can tell you my wages have not increased with the price of fuel!

I like the idea but I feel it is too bright. There is no black, or very dark point for my eye to use to balance the image tones. I do like the DOF and comp very much, though

I agree with Jeff's comments however it's a Wall Street problem too, as investors won't let companies soften profit margins.

Actually, Marc, I'm not a flower guy either. However, with my landscape stock sales heading in the wrong direction I need to try new things (for me). Funny what does and what doesn't sell in stock and after 15 years in the business I still don't have it figured out. :frown:

I'm basically an idiot on abstracts like this, but wanted to follow Marc's good advice and chime in on this anyway. I like it! Andy's right that it's pretty brilliant to look at, so that might be something to adjust, but the little pollen details are interesting to look at. The red "flames" in the petals lead your eye to the center of the flower (I guess that works for bees, too?). One minor adjustment would be to slightly rotate this so that the bottom of the triangle formed by the stamens is parallel to the frame. That would make for a very formal abstract, which is kind of what I expect to see in this sort of composition.

Love this perspective....very fresh!

I think cropping out all the red in the third (perspective crop) would make the red on top look like flames. I think that would be cool.
