CS3, Not Windows Ready?

I'm having no end of problems since the installation of CS3 under Windows XP. Part of the difficulty of living in a remote area is the lack of technical expertise to resolve problems. Hopefully some here may be able to assist me.

It started with the Epson 2200 not centring prints. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and print monitors three times now. Using Hahnemuhle 308 8X11.5 it doesn't centre, running a heavy piece of card through last night, it did. Tried the Qimage demo and it assigns a print size completely different to the one the driver specifies, though it does centre a distorted image.

I haven't as yet tried another brand of photo paper to see if CS3 will centre on that. The Hahnemuhle would centre under CS2.

In CS3 Photoshop, Bridge and Camera Raw give me three different densities of exposure ranging from about 1 to 1.5 stops. Which is the true one?

With the market here, most of my printing is for personal use, a lot of it being free prints in exchange for model releases and some for gifts. The bigger concern is the imaging I send south for publication, is the exposure correct?

In researching on the net, it seems there are a number of dissatisfied CS3 Windows users. Some I've read stating they have demanded a refund from Adobe and gone back to CS2. Printing with Epson printers seems to a major cause of complaint.

I'm at my wits end. It may be something I'm doing, but I too am at the point of pulling off CS3 in favour of CS2. Am beginning to look very nostalgiclly at E-6 processing!

Cheers,
Dave

Gee Dave, I feel for you. I'm happy to say I have experienced nothing like you describe in your horror story. I use windows vista, before I had vista I used CS3 on XP....no problems in either. I have an Epson 1800 and it works great!

So...I guess it sucks to you. :frown:

Hi Dave,
I'm also having problems with CS3 under Windows XP Pro. They are different problems than yours. Often times, but not always, when I save an image, CS3 experiences a fatal flaw and must close the entire application, causing a loss of the data which I was trying to save.

When I have an image open in Camera Raw and ask it to open it in CS3, the photoshop app will open but the image never appears. I must be opened in CS3 independently. I can work around these but why do I have to? What a pain!

If you hear of any solutions, please post them. I'd like to get these issues solved.

Thanks!

Nick,

Luminous Landscape seems to have some good threads on CS3 problems, at least on the Epson front, as that is what I was largely looking for. Perhaps they may have something on your problem.

The trouble is you just don't know where to look. Should I reinstall CS3 ? Just upgraded to a new machine with an onboard colour card. Should I get an independent card? The Epson drivers are several years old now with no sign of an upgrade. There are so many variables that even an educated guess is impossible; and perhaps an expensive mistake!

There's a well-known issue with CS3 printing and non-standard paper sizes/settings - CS3 doesn't save them and you have to go in and reset them every time. :(

I just experienced my first crash on image save last night, but haven't had any other problems like it other than that one time.

I have never been an early adopter for this very reason. A major rewrite of a program as complex as PSCS is bound to have bugs. Additionally, drivers may be rushed onto the market, and they themselves may have bugs which then exacerbates the whole situation.

So, it takes time to get the bugs fixed, which is why I wait to upgrade. Based upon the bashing that CS3 is getting, not to mention the lack of updated Epson drivers, it will be a good long time before I plop down my scheckles, if ever.

Your integrated video should not cause a problem, as far as I can see. Your issues appear to be software related.

Dave, I wish you well. I honestly do not have a direction pointer for you. I wish I did.

David, this probably won't be very helpul, but I am running CS3 under Vista and I am having no problems except that sometimes it is a little slow - but adobe has a fix for that which I have not implemented yet. I have not tried printing yet, and I have an Epson - so it may be raining in paradise soon.

David-

I am having this problem as well. Also, if you go to the Adobe Users' Support Forum, you will find out that a good number of other people are having it as well. No matter what I do, my pictures will not center, a problem that I never had with CS2. I am now having to take the finished image from CS3 and print it out in CS2, a major pain. I understand that Adobe is having many bug problems with the Windows version of CS3, which is surprising, given the fact that they released a beta version for several months in which some people experienced and wrote them about this issue, as I did. I had hoped it would have been fixed with the release of CS3, but it wasn't. I have no suggestions other than print in CS2 until Adobe releases a fix for this. It is a well known problem.
