There sure is a lot of stuff going on in this scene. Looks like the bird and I had the same thing in mind...taking in the scene. He had a little better view than I though .
Rick,
There is alot going on but I think it all works together nicely. Maybe a little off the bottom halfway to the mossy log on the right might work better. Nonetheless very cool!
This begins to move into the abstract, a major blind spot for me - but I like the cropped version. What threw me on this one is the log on the right - at first, I thought I was looking at a reflection in still water at the bottom, then realized it's really suspeneded over the water, and that's a shadow (I think?). The dipper is kind of cool to have in the image, but also seems lost in all of the larger action. Again, this could be me trying to morph something more abstract into a traditional landscape view.
The other part I can't figure out is the shutter speed - is this a merge of two different speeds? Looks longer on the left than on the right by a significant margin. I guess my overall reaction is that my eye wants to go to the boulder on the left, framed by water, but the spray and action on the right pulls away from that. Another possible crop could be just to the right of that tuft of grass to the right of the bird..?
Wow, I really did this, the log on the right providing a 3D effect of great depth. The moss on the left on those gorgeous rocks pulls me back and forth from the splash of water on the right. Very cool and dynamic.
Very nice, Rick. At first glance, I thought it was too busy. But then I started enjoying the scenes within the scene, and like it as is. I also like it with the left 1/3 of the photo cropped off, emphasising the bird looking into the falls.
Oh yeah baby I'm liking this one!!! The exposure time which is short REALLY works well here. Long enough to intone a good sense of motion but not too long as to look way too milky. The warm light from right to left does a superb job of highlighting the beautiful textures of the mosses in the background. The splash on the right too adds a bit of interest. That wouldn't have worked with a longer exposure at all. Crisp details and spot on exposure top this off!! Oh and last but not least the Dipper is tre cool!!
Thanks for the comments folks. Tom, you guessed it. This is two different shutter speeds, but not that far apart really. One at .6 seconds (left4/5 of the image) and 1/4th second on the right most side. I can understand the thoughts on the comp and the crop.
