I haven't been posting here very often but I do peek in from time to time and it's amazing to see the variety and excellence of the images being posted by both old and new PNW photographers. What a great group of photographers we have in this little corner of the country!!
Recently I was visiting my son and his wife on the east coast of Florida and of course had to spend some time at the beach. Here's one shot I got of what I believe is a 2nd year Laughing Gull soaring on the air currents above the high surf along the coast (from tropical storm Andrea about 3 weeks ago).
Also, Rick, if you're reading this, please do let your brother know that I am thinking of him as I realize that he is about to have surgery shortly. He is in my prayers!
Geoff,
First...this image may be simple...but I absolutely love it. That gull is placed perfectly in the frame, and the bg works very well also...
As far as Erik goes...Thank you very much! I appreciate it and I know he does too. Right now as I type, he is having surgery. He was pretty nervous yesterday when I stopped by his house. We discussed how much he appreciated the folks who have wished him well, and that sort of thing. It really helps him! So thanks again!
Even though I have seen so many pictures like this, this one has a very special quality and intangible beauty to it. Perfect comp, light, and exposure. And that background is I think what makes it... Soft and graceful, awesome.
Eric - gulls are one of the most commonly photographed birds (especially in flight), mostly by beginners because they are easier to capture in flight than many other birds. I've taken my share of gull shots. Nevertheless, I'll still grab a shot of a gull if I feel they are in particularly good surroundings or exhibit some other notable behavior or looks. I agree that it was the picturesque background that attracted me to this image.
Rick - I like simplicity a lot too! Meanwhile, please let us know how Erik's surgery went. I did look up on his site and saw the latest from his wife too.
Andy - thank you! Those were my feelings too as I was postprocessing this one.
