My girlfriend and I are going to PhotoArts Santa Fe July 13-21 and need recommendations for places to stay. Something nice (unique and maybe even quaint), not too far from the center of town, and not too expensive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My wife and I stayed at the Chapelle St. Casitas a few years ago and were pretty pleased. The smallest one was fine for 2 people.

Nat: I just stayed at the Inn of the Governors a month ago. It's right off the square, has charm, was reasonably priced when I stayed. Has a great bar (Del Charro Saloon) to relax at, great pub grub at cheap prices at the . Also has a very good hot breakfast buffet which is included with the room. Only downside is the rooms may be a tad on the smaller size but still clean and comfy. Web site is, www.innofthegovernors.com

The Inn of the Governors fits the bill for affordable but nice near the Plaza. You'll be about 3 long blocks from the Photo Arts show is usually located. And Del Charro is a good bar that locals hang out at. It's where I recommend friends and family when they come to town. There are nicer places if your're willing to pay.

Nat - the Water Street Inn is a favorite of ours, a few blocks from the plaza. They have a range of rooms (and prices) - all very nicely done. For a little more than the cost of a standard B&B room, you can get a nice suite which will have a private entrance off of a cozy courtyard and a private garden with covered patio; our favorite is the Atalaya Suite, though they're all very nice. The service has always been outstanding.

We typically eat out, but their breakfasts are outstanding. I'm not big on social gatherings with strangers, but they also typically have a happy hour get-together for their guests where they provide local wines and great home-made hors dourves and salsas. Despite my asocial tendencies, I actually don't mind swinging in before heading up to the plaza for dinner!

I'd say it's a little more expensive than average, but it's also one of the best (and most reliable) experiences for the dollar that we've found down there. Enjoy!

edit: if you're working in some photography and you head out to El Santuario de Chimayo, be sure to plan for a meal at the nearby Rancho de Chimayo . Reasonably priced, excellent food and great margaritas!!

Rancho de Chimayo is the best in the state.
