Hi Barrie, gorgeous photo. Nice depth of field on a head-on subject. I think this could be a drone fly. They mimic bees as a defence mechanism. Also look at hairy-footed flower bees. They tend to have shorter hairs like this.
What's the minimum focus distance on a 180mm Macro?

10 repliesNot sure when I last posted a photo on UKNP but having taken delivery of a shiny new macro lens this morning (yee haa), I thought I'd give it a bash.
I have no idea of the species so if anyone can help (bit difficult from this viewpoint I'd imagine).

Absolute STUNNER of an image Barrie - whatever you took it with was really worth the money - excellent
Syrphidae (Hoverflies) maybe one of the bee mimics e.g. Eristalis species. I have a photo of
Eristalis pertinax on http://www.spacefornature.co.uk/default.asp?searchindex=none&gallery=Galleries\Animals\Insects\Flies\Hoverflies\eristalis-pertinax-david-taylor-051108.xml if that's any help.
Sorry, couldn't resist. I am considering a new macro lens and the 180 looks good. Very nice shot.
