tripod question

I was wondering if anybody could help me? I need a new tripod, my old one was given to me, is not very sturdy and a new bit of it seems to break off each day.

My heaviest setup is a 350D + 300mm F4L + 1.4 extender and it is not likely to get any heavier any time soon. I weighed it and it is only 2.07kg or so.

I tried working out what is right for me but am completely lost after looking at warehouse express.

Looking to spend under £200 for head and legs, don't know if this is possible but if not will have to settle for a monopod.

Thanks,

Jack

Jack,

I have the Manfrotto 055proB legs and the Manfrotto 393 gimbal head which supports my D2X and 200-400 weighing about 4.5 - 5kg.

The above combo I used to use with my 600mm until the 055proB decided enough was enough lol. But for a lighter setup it would be hard to fault it.

Another vote for the 055. Should be able to buy with a decent head for less than £200. Legs max load is 7kg.

Have a look at Benro through a company called Photopal, they are Gitzo clones, fraction of the price and really good!

I can recommend also the Benro. I use the Benro Flexpod, and it happily manages my D200, gimbal head and Sigmonster. Great tripods.

Hi Jack

I use a Manfrotto 190 tripod (slightly lighter version of the 055) and either a 393 gimball head or a 484 ball and socket head with RC2 quick release plates.

Approx cost (based on speedgraphic prices)

190CLB Tripod £96
484RC2 ball and socket head £40
393 gimball about £99

This combination will be good enough for your camera/lens combination.

The Manfrotto equipment is solid, well designed and lightweight. Never had any problems with my tripod or heads in the 4 or so years I have used them.

cheers

Sean

Hi Jack,
Another vote for the 055 , I use a 055ProB with a 468 head for my dragonfly shots and this set-up works a treat for me , depending on which head you choose £200 will buy you a very good set-up.

Kind regards
Andy...

I also use the 055, but the NAT3 model. I also use the 393, but it maybe a little over the top, i use the 222 Action ball for lighter lenses, and find that very stable.
