This business gets tougher every week. Flora had 90 postings this past week with only 6 ineligible for consideration. Of the 84 candidates there were over 30 with double figure comments. I chose Michael Lowe's Blue-eyed Grass for its technical and compositional excellence. Shooting small flowers takes much patience and care in camera positioning and DOF selection and I thought Michael's image was a piece of superb craftsmanship. Wayne Rhodus had two wonderful Gerbera daisy shots here and here. Nathan Buck posted a terrific SOA shot.
Finally, I would like to give a special tip of the cap to George Hall who has posted a wonderful series of a lilac blossom spanning the entire month of May. All of the images were top notch but Chapter 7 was exceptional. For sustained excellence George's series was hard to beat and you owe it to yourself to look at the whole collection. Thanks for all the great work this week. Keep those posts and comments coming. >=))>
Thanks for posting a little of your thoughts on making the weekly picks. This is an extra little gift to the community above and beyond the herculean (or perhaps Sisyphean) task of making the pick. There are always so many great photographs in Flora that you can't possibly go wrong. Congratulations to Mr. Lowe.
I've enjoyed your musings! It helps to understand a little of what you have to go through to make the pick. What a difficult job with all the wonderful postings! You've done well, and congrats to Michael Lowe this week.
I made the picks in Fauna, Photo Art and (as usual) the WC Gallery.
Brad Hill's photo in Fauna caught my eye immediately. A fanatastic photo, and the comments left by others sum up my feelings well. This one caught my eye too and would have been my next choice.
While Cindy Mead takes a break due to ongoing health issues, I am making the picks in Photo Art. David Weber's photo is a great example of how to take a not-so-great photo and make something interesting out of it. I could have just as easily chosen this photo by Pat Brundage, and it took my some time to decide.
We always have many great photos posted in the WC gallery, and it ultimately comes down to which one best matches the theme. In this case, out of the many equally impressive photos posted, I chose Paul's photo because of it's overall quality and adherence to the theme "Cactus Scenes."
Bill, I agree, Michael's shot was excellent and deserving of your selection. And with all the postings that go on in Flora I actually missed his wonderful shot, so I'm glad you pointed it out!
Keep up the good work and don't forget to set some time aside to make some of your beautiful images!
I'm a rather newbie here, but certainly not new to the web. So I feel rather silly for asking ... but now that you've toutedMichael Lowe's Blue-eyed Grass, how do I go see it? There's no link. And I get confused when looking on the rest of the site. What's the difference between "Forums and Galleries" and "Portfolios"?
Jonathan, at the top right corner of the page you will see a drop-down menu - select "Editor's Picks."

Thank you Bill for thought process as you make your weekly selections. With all the extraordinary images posted each week it has to be tough. You make fantastic choices each week, all are very deserving. Michael's image this week was exceptional
Thank you Bill for the acknowledgement of my lilac series. I had a wonderful time doing it and it was a great learning experience as well, also I appreciate all the support from my NPN family.
Hi George and Bill,
I certainly agree that the Flora gallery makes the moderator's job pretty tough! I so much enjoy your musings, Bill.
And George, your lilac series was tremendous. I agree with you about how nice it is to have the support of NPN members when you're working on new things or a series. I was so encouraged by the reponse to my Crocus series from earlier this Spring, that it inspired me to work on making better landscape images. And the response from the NPN family once again proved so helpful with critique and encouragement and tips. Thanks everyone for making this such a great community to which to belong.
