I have recently changed from a Canon 10D to a 30D. Today I put in a brand new SANDISK Extreme CF Card into the 30D and it came up with a CF error. Attempts to reformat gave a Err 99 (general error). The card did however work in the 10D without a problem. and to confuse matters further the 30D reads and writes to any of the other CF cards I have (although none of the others are SANDISK Extreme.)
Has anyone had any experience of this? if so is it likely to be the camera (seems to function ok with a wide variety of other cards!)
I have had the 10d for well over 2 years without any problem, its the first time I have seen such an error.
At the moment I don't know whether to get the Camera checked or the Flash Card returned as they both seem to work ok independantly,
Chances are that the card is OK. I presume that the reformat you've tried is the camera's 'reformat card' option. If that's the case, then you should try reformating the card using your computer. Presuming you're using windows XP, put the card in the computer's card reader and right click the card's icon when it appears in windows explorer - a menu should appear with an option to Format - click on that and then make sure the format type is set to FAT16. Uncheck the 'Quick Format' option too and then click the OK or Format button (sorry - I'm typing this from memory on a Mac so I might not have got the exact phrases!).
Once you've done that, you should then be able to 'format' the card in the camera and hopefully it should work ok.
For what it's worth, the camera's 'format' option simply erases files and adds a couple of directories to the card - usually DCIM and EOSxyz for canon cameras! It doesn't reformat the card in the sense that a computer formats it's hard disk drives.

Hope that helps.
I too have returned cards with no quibbles
