Kapaula Sunset, Maui

Hi Folks,

We (my wife and I) spent two weeks on Maui in April taking a break from the grind dividing our time between snorkeling and shooting. While the sunsets were not as spectacular as we'd hoped, the shoreline rocks more than made up for the lack of sensational colour in the sky (I think...).

Anyway, here's one taken near the end of a rocky outcrop at Kapaula Beach in West Maui. I used a 17-40 at 17mm on a 30D, a shutter speed of 1/6th (tried to get it slower for the water) at f13. All this on a tripod. I also used two GND filters at the time of exposure, both 2 stops to hold back the sky.

As for processing I tried to bring up the FG a little from the RAW file and also corrected a slight distortion issue with PTLens. Other than that a little sat, shadow and highlight control and USM (100, 1.4, 0).

We might go back to Hawaii next year (perhaps to the Big Island this time) so any suggestions as to what I could have done a better job of would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lee

I can't find anything wrong with it, Lee. You have that big ol black area in the LR that I'm unsure about. I'll bet that spot wouldn't look too good in a print. It gives form to that rock above it and the rock in the LR are pretty nice, maybe cropping just half of it.
All in all though, I'd be real happy if it was mine.

I'm in agreement with Mark on the void in the lower right, except that I'd likely crop more than half of it... it just doesn't seem to me like it's contributing anything.

Aside from that I love the high contrast of the image, and the colors saturation i n the sky is perfect.
