Hi,

This question is specifically for the users of the Canon 17-40 lens on full-frame bodies using the Cokin P holder.

Which polarizer (slim if so is the case) do you use with the least amount of vignetting? I have two Cokin P holders, one with both slots available, and the other with the first slot and the filler slot sawed off.

It would be nice to know if I can get a polarizer (warming or not), if I can use the 17-40 at 17mm on FF bodies without vignetting.

Singh-Ray slim polarizer might be interesting, but it is so expensive - more than some lenses that puts it outside my budget!

I appreciate your responses.

Thanks, Ashutosh

I use a Tiffen slim polarizer with this lens on a 5D and it doesn't vignette.

I use a B&W slim polarizer with the 17-40 on my 5D and it does not vignette.

The sprocketed polarizers desgned to fit in the rear slot of the Cokin holder will vignette with the 17-40 at the wider setting. Some people use a thin mount polarizer like Tiffen, B+W, Sing-Ray etc and then you can file the opening of a Cokin P-holder to slip over the lens hood bayonet mounts on the barrel of the 17-40 to give you a permanent mount cokin holder on the lens that will work with the polarizer and a grad and not vignette at all on full-frame cameras. Interesting idea, Darwin - I never thought about this. I believe this would make taking the polarizer off a bit messy, but it's still worth investigation. Thanks!

Guy and Keith, do you use these slim polarizers on the Cokin-P holder or is it the standard 77mm ring?

Standard 77mm ring. I'm not sure you could get away with no vignetting using the holder.

I use a 77mm thin Singh Ray polarizer, but use the Cokin Z filter holder for my Singh Ray GND filters (originally used P holder and switched), those filters are larger than the P filters and eliminate any vignetting. Another advantage to the bigger filters is it gives you more filter for adjustments.
