Coming Home
A fishing boat returns to St. Johns, Newfoundland, right before sunrise, passing by the Cape Spear Lighthouse, the eastern most point in North America.

I had posted an image almost identical to this, but without the boat last fall. The old image was a HDR composite because at the time I didn't like any of the processing I could do with any individual image of this scene. The boat was in the original, but I cloned it out since it was moving and with the HDR it left boat ghosts through the image.

So, the new one was processed in ACR 4.1, with only some selective sharpening done in CS3. I am pretty happy with the results as I was able to pull in most of the highlights and keep some detail in the shadows by using the exposure/recover and shadow/fill light controls in ACR and some tweaking of the curves in ACR.

4.1 is a great tool. I'd say 95% of my processing is done in that now with only a few things done in CS3, mostly creative stuff and sharpening.

Anyway, I think this image has a little more impact with the boat coming back to harbor than without it.

Great colors there, Ryan. The light in the tower is the icing on the cake. The fill light and hilite recovery are great additions to ACR. I'm really liking them a lot, too.

Now how do I get that dang song out of my head??

I have to agree with the above, the light in the tower is perfect.

Ryan, I remember this shot. I like the added depth the boat provides. Fills the negative space nicely.

It has mood, the compostion is right on and the technicals are perfect. All that equals a great image. Nice work!
