Another 90 image week in Flora with 81 eligible for consideration. Of those 36 had double figure comments. I chose David Schwaegler'sEmerging Stars for its subject matter and graphic appeal. This points out the subjective nature of the selection process as David's image was not the most viewed or most commented upon. However I thought it had the best combination of elements and is an example of a finely crafted image in concept, composition and presentation. Richard Tomalty, David Richards, and Vic Harris all posted strong images of unique subjects. Thanks again to everyone who is posting and commenting. Keep up the good work. >=))>
I enjoy your musings, and also appreciate the platform to recognize others who are making flora really sing this year. Thanks for all you are doing! Excellent choice this week!!!

Congrats to David on the MP and all the talented photographers mentioned in this week's Moderator Musings! Another fantastic week of images posted in Flora!
It doesn't look like it's going to get any easier does it Bill?
Thanks, Bill. I must say given the many outstanding images again this week in flora I was quite surprised and honored. I'm lucky to have one of the most outstanding nature preserves in Northern Illinois at my doorstep with over 400 different plant species as potential subjects.
Ditto to everyone comments. It's good to see the moderator add the input you do. Thanks for your efforts. It's always good to remind folks who give their time that its appreciated.

Bill - I enjoy seeing which images just missed the cut as well as the winner each week. Thank you for this extra info above and beyond your duties. Your statement about posts with double digit comments does bring up one question I can't seem to find the answer for -
1) What days postings are eligible for the moderators' pick that comes out on Monday? Is it the previous Monday-Sunday? Saturday-Friday?
2) If something was posted at the tail end of that, is it possible that it might get missed when using the "double-digit comment" criteria?
Just curious - however you do it, it's a bonus for all of us.
David: The consideration period is Sunday through Saturday. For this week I reviewed images posted June 3 through June 9. I make the double digit comment remark merely to illustrate the volume of images that get that kind of response. Its a statement about the overall quality of the forum. I'll have no qualms about choosing an image posted late in the cosideration cycle if I think it is overwhelmingly compelling. However, on the images that get to the top of the selection processes I look at how others have reacted to them as well as my own response. In that sense an image posted later in the week may be handicapped by limited opportunity to get comments before the deadline. Since we make the calls the day after the cycle ends there is the chance that a late posting won't get a thorough review by the forum members. I suppose the remedy for that scenario would be to make the cycle Friday through Thursday with selections still made on Sunday. I've not suggested that to Jim because I just now thought of it but that may be a possible solution. Its his call and he would have to run it by the other moderators. Hope this helps and I'm always open to suggestions. >=))>
David, it should be noted that even though a high number of comments may indicate an excellent photo, the number of comments is not used as a criteria for photo selection, though it is useful for spotting the contenders in a busy gallery. I always give the photos posted over the last few days of the week an extra careful review to make sure an excellent one is not over looked.
BTW, if we wanted to make the weekly picks based strictly on viewer feedback, we would install one of those photo rating systems like used on other sites - and then have to deal with all of the short comings of such a system.
In any case, your comments and suggestions are appreciated - thanks!
Jim - I wasn't in any way suggesting that the picks were actually based on the feedback. I just noticed that Bill was using the number of comments (good or bad apparently) to help sort out which pics he should pay close attention too - and it brought to mind the questions I asked. Good to know that the moderators are cognizant of the posting date/#of comments relationship. Sorry if I was misunderstood, and thanks to you (and all the moderators) for putting in the time to make the pics each week.
