Great Skua, Iceland
Great Skua (Catharacta skua), Iceland
This is an image I took on a recent visit to Iceland. Unfortunately the light wasn't so good so I had to try and use the Highlights?Shadow tool in PhotoShop and I'm not sure if I've got it 100% right. If anyone has any ideas about how to improve that aspect of the image I would welcome them. The image itself represents about 70% of the original. The technical details are:
- Camera: Canon EOS 1D Mk IIN
- Lens: Canon 500mm f4 IS + 1.4x
- Aperture: f7.1 -1/3
- Shutter Speed: 1/2000s
- ISO: 200
- Metering: Evaluative
- Exposure Control: Aperture Priority
- Camera Support: Handheld
- RAW Conversion: RawShooter Premium
- Post Processing: Highlights/Shadow, Levels, Curves, USM (FocalBlade)

Many thanks for looking

Hi Adrian,
I can understand why you wish to recover the image as the pose is terrific, I can only suggest using the dodge tool to lighten the eye.

Yes Adrian the highlight would make it as it is indeed a nice angle on the bird.
I have tried isolating eyes , or at least the highlight part then using levels to lighten.

Tim & Major,

Many thanks - I think I'll give this one some more work

Adrian - can you get hold of a copy of Adobe lightroom - you might find it easier to achieve what you are after with the fill light function.

It's a nice pose and the comp works so I can understand why you want to try and get it better :wavey: :wavey:

Andy,

Believe it or not I have a copy of lightroom but my PC only has Windows 2000 at the moment :frown: - I'm just waiting for the financial advisor (or wife as she is better known  ) to give the go-ahead for the purchase of either a) Windows XP or b) a new computer
