Mildly dumb DVD burning question

After getting back my computer from a hard drive crash (see below), I started burning a bunch of DVD's as a temporary backup. It seems to be really flying along, which has me worried. So my question, using a 16x burner, about how long should it take to burn 4.5 gig of data? A ballpark figure is fine. Previously, it was taking a long hour and now 4-6 minutes.

Dan, I don't have a writer, but I think 16x is a little over 20 MB per second. 4.5 GB is 4500 MB - so that should be about 4 minutes, assuming perfect conditions/constant speed/buffering/etc.

But even if that isn't correct, can't you just try reading the DVD back and checking a few files? You should also be able to see everything on it that you expect.

Yeah, that sounds right for burning on a fast burner, on my mac it then takes 10 to 15 minutes to re-read the entire disk and verify it bit by bit to make sure it is a perfect copy.

Yeah, that it what I thought it should have been, but I had been getting burn times well over an hour. I didn't think that was right, but when I asked the techs at the store when I first got the computer, they were thought it was pretty normal. It was a nice surprise last night to get my computer back and find things has speeded up by quite a bit.

Thanks for the information.
