Having infrequently used extension tubes with long lenses, I am curious about the lens to subject distance with the lens you used and also the length of tube used

Hi Barry,
The closest focusing distance of the lens on it's own is about 6ft (as you're probably already aware),but I often use it in combination with the set of three Kenko extension tubes (12mm,20mm and 36mm).
For this shot,if I remember correctly,I used the 36mm tube (and may possibly have also used the 12mm tube in addition, although I think it was more likely to have been just the 36mm extension tube on this occasion).
The camera to subject distance would have been roughly 4-4.5 feet.
Just had a look in one of my wildlife books and according to that, the size is 8.8cm - 10.1cm for the vole's head and body, with the tail being nearly half that length again.
It goes on to say that they're also found in wet places and are a good swimmer and diver.
So sounds like it could be a possibility for your sighting
They seem to come to food regular as clockwork and very frequently,so could be worth trying.

Good to see you posting again
Bloomin' 'eck - I'm surprised the little thing didn't clean your lens glass for you!
Nice work Justin.
