I usually do a manual/visual monitor calibration but I've just been lent a MonacoOPTIX XR colorimeter and I don't know wether to pay for this thing or buy a Spyder2Pro.

My display newly done with the Monaco looks a tad different I'd have to say; my gamma is a bit lower, my visual settings for G & B were bang on but Red was a touch hot

So if anyone here who uses ANY brand of calibration hardware/software I could do with some serious feedback on your findings, choices etc.

Thanks muchly in advance :toast: :wavey:

Andy,

I've been using the Gretag Macbeth Eyeone Display 2 for the last year or two and am extremely happy with it.
I find my screen to print match is excellent.
I'd purchase exactly the same product tomorrow if need be.

One excellent feature with the latest Eyeone software,(as long as your monitor supports the automaic operation),is you literally connect it,launch the software, and that's it   the software does everything else automatically.

I have used a Spyder 2 to calibrate my Eizo against that require for my Lab, the results are fine.

That said the Eye2 gets better right-ups.

I use a Spyder 2 and have never had any complaints from agencies. Infact they've said they've never had to adjust my images at all (famous last words??) but sometimes need to for some other folk. So I guess its working well. Seem to print well with labs also. Like Tom I've heard good things about the Macbeth Eye2 and so probably either will be a reliable bet.

Andy,

Very briefly...

The Gretag magbeth/X-rite Eye one hardware and software is probably the best you can get, we have a near perfect match over 10 workstations and use the system for all calibration/profiling for WPOY.... all systems will give good results, just the G-Mac look up tables arevery accurate

All the best & speak soon

The best 3rd-party calibration software out there (ColorEyes) only bundle themselves with Spyder 2 and Monaco Optix XR (also known as a DTP-41):

I would actually encourage you to look at your results from the Monaco Optix before you get anything else. Those deep into color management greatly prefer it - which is ironic since Xrite is discontinuing it. It is supposed to be very accurate and has a higher level of sophistication that some others. For example I hear it has an ambient temperature circuit that corrects for differences in temperature when taking readings.
