Got to hike about 25 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park last week. The Mountain Laurel greeted us along the trail with the occasional black bear. The laurel would stand still for a close up while the bear just turned tail and ran. Of course the tail end of a bear is the side I most want to see as it runs away!

Well done Rod! Nice capture of the details in the flowers, I like how it seems to be floating against the black BG. Just out of curiosity did you use flash to get the dark BG? Speaking for myself, if my only shot of a bear was it's backside I'd probably have taken it. Nice work Rod and thanks for sharing!

David,
Sorry, I forgot to mention I applied the background in Photoshop CS3. I was playing around with the quick selection tool and find it much more useful that the CS2 version.

Good PS3 technique Rod, Really like how you were able to isolate the flowers, nicely done.

Beautiful shot, Rod. The flowers a perfect and the background really works. If I saw a bear on the trail I would want to see him going away, too.

The flowers occured naturally in the shape of a cross. I thought it was an intriguing arrangement.
